The Training visa lets you come to Australia for genuine, structured workplace-based occupational training or professional development. It’s not a general work visa — but it can be a valuable stepping stone for building skills, meeting professional registration requirements, or gaining Australian workplace experience.
| Points | Description |
|---|---|
| Length of stay | Up to 2 years, depending on your approved training program |
| Purpose | Structured, supervised occupational training — not ongoing employment |
| Visa condition 8102 | Work is restricted to activities directly related to your approved training program |
| Health insurance | Mandatory for the life of the visa |
Since 11 March 2026, you can no longer lodge your Training visa application at the same time as your sponsor’s approval and nomination. Your sponsor must now have:
18.Approved Temporary Activities Sponsor status, and
19.An approved Training visa nomination for you
…both fully in place before your visa application can be validly lodged (Commonwealth Government agency sponsors are exempt from the nomination requirement). This makes early planning essential, particularly if you’re already in Australia on another visa that’s due to expire.
Because sponsorship and nomination approval can now take several months and must be finalised before you apply, we strongly recommend starting the process at least 6 months before you need your visa — especially if your current visa is close to expiring.
